A Western Australian First Nations business has won two major gongs at the 2023 Telstra Business Awards.
Winyama Digital Solutions picked up the Business of the Year award as well as the Indigenous Excellence category at the ceremony in Naarm (Melbourne) on Thursday night.
The leading geospatial and cloud consultancy firm was founded by Ngarluma Traditional Owner, Andrew Dowding and has trained more than 1000 Indigenous people in geospatial mapping since opening its doors in 2019.
The Perth-based company is one of only a handful of Indigenous-owned businesses in Australia that offer services including; cultural mapping, heritage mapping, IT consulting, geospatial consulting and free mapping training through their social initiative, the Indigenous Mapping Workshop Australia.
Mr Dowding said the use of digital tools was growing in the Indigenous business community.
"From Indigenous ranger programs to native title organisations, the use of digital tools is accelerating. But it's crucial these indigenous-led organisations have a firm grasp on the benefits of tools, how it helps assert sovereignty or encourages data governance.
"I can't say thank you enough to the Telstra judges who had the difficult task of looking across all businesses - but then saw something special in our business.
To look across the broad range of inspiring businesses and picking Winyama as the winner is truly humbling."
Telstra group executive Brad Whitcomb said Winyama Digital Solutions was empowering Indigenous communities in the digital world.
"The team's efforts in preserving and protecting cultural knowledge through modern technology is driving change from the ground up, not only through the work the business does but through the team's commitment to educating the next generation of change-makers," he said.
"They're an incredibly deserving winner and we look forward to witnessing the evolution and growth of their business as they continue to undertake important work across the country."
