The federal government will continue to support former members of the collapsed Youpla Group, Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney and Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones announced on Tuesday.
The government's Youpla Group Funeral Benefits Program has been extended and will now accept applications until 30 June 2024.
The Program, which was announced as an interim measure in the weeks after the election of the Albanese government in May, 2022, pays a grant in place of a funeral benefit that would otherwise have been paid by the Youpla Group before its collapse.
On Tuesday the ministers said they are committed to "an enduring resolution" to the Youpla Group collapse, however the process has been more complex than expected.
"By extending the interim Program, we are giving former Youpla Group customers certainty while the final details of the enduring resolution are worked through," the ministers said in a joint statement.
Payments are made to eligible beneficiaries of Youpla Group policy holders who had an active funeral policy on or after 1 April 2020.
Since the program started on 7 September 2022, it has approved over 325 grants with a total value of over $2.6 million, enabling hundreds of First Nations families to mourn their loved ones.
