A man has been charged with the murder of a 39-year-old woman in the predominantly Aboriginal north Queensland community of Palm Island.
Emergency services were called to a Clump Road residence at around 9am on September 1 following reports a woman had sustained a life-threatening head injury.
The woman died two days later after being earlier airlifted to Townsville University Hospital for treatment.
On September 16 police arrested and charged a 36-year-old local man with the alleged murder (domestic violence) following "extensive investigations", Queensland Police confirmed on Monday.
"It will be further alleged the woman and man were known to each other," Queensland Police said in a statement.
Palm Island, also known as Great Palm Island or Bwgcolman, sits off the coast approximately 60km north of Townsville.
The area, including surrounding islands, has an Indigenous population of more than 90 per cent according to the most recent census.
The alleged offender has been remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at Townsville Magistrates Court on November 5.
