In the latest development of a long-running investigation, it has been announced the decision regarding the World Heritage Listing for the Murujuga Cultural Landscape will be made in July when the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meets in Bulgaria.
Over the past year, Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation has hosted visits from representatives of the advisory bodies to the Committee and participated in meetings with the Australian government and the World Heritage Centre to inform decision making and "ensure the assessment considers Ngarda-Ngarli perspectives on what is significant about Murujuga".
The Australian government nominated Murujuga Cultural Landscape for inscription on the World Heritage List more than two years ago, in late January 2023.
If accepted, Murujuga would be only the second site in Australia listed for World Heritage Status for First Nations cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, MAC has continued joint management planning with Western Australia's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) for the islands of the Dampier Archipelago, and in August the Corporation welcomed a commitment by the WA Premier to transfer West Intercourse Island to the island reserve network.
The MAC Rangers continue to prepare for more visitors once UNESCO Listing occurs.
