Katrina Fanning AO PSM, the 2020 ACT Australian of the Year, has been appointed Chairperson of Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL).
AHL operates a national network of accommodation facilities, providing culturally safe and affordable housing that supports First Nations people to access essential services and economic opportunities, and the proud Wiradjuri woman and current Director of Coolamon Advisors will bring extensive leadership experience and a long record of service to First Nations communities — alongside deep expertise in government policy and operations — to the role.
Following a successful rugby league playing career, Ms Fanning went on to hold senior leadership roles in the sport, including manager of the Indigenous Women's All Stars team, Chairperson of the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council, and President of both the Canberra and Australian Women's Rugby League Associations.
"I congratulate Ms Fanning on her appointment as Director and Chairperson of Aboriginal Hostels Limited," said Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy.
"Her vision and expertise will strengthen AHL's commitment to providing safe, affordable and culturally appropriate accommodation for First Nations people across Australia."
Ms Fanning has also held senior roles in the public sector at the Senior Executive Service level, leading complex operational and strategic work, including serving as General Manager of Operations and General Manager of Strategy, Innovation and People at Aboriginal Hostels Limited.
In recognition of her service, Ms Fanning was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2023 for distinguished contributions to First Nations communities through education, health and sport. She was also awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) in 2015 for outstanding contribution to Indigenous Affairs and named ACT Australian of the Year in 2020.
Ms Fanning will take up the role of Director and Chairperson on the AHL board on a part-time basis from December 2025, for a three-year term.
