In a move set to bolster the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pharmacy workforce, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and Symbion have thrown open the doors to scholarship applications for their new student initiative.
The program was announced earlier this week, marking a significant step in the organisations' ongoing reconciliation efforts.
The initiative is devised to aid in the enhancement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce by offering educational and career support.
The endgame of the program is not only to cultivate a robust Indigenous pharmacy workforce but also to augment the provision and access to culturally attuned pharmacy services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
In terms of the specifics, the program will award four pharmacy student scholarships, each recipient will receive an annual entitlement of $10,000.
Further perks include covering conference registration fees, travel and accommodation to a pharmacy conference for a year.
Simultaneously, the initiative will also provide two pharmacy assistant scholarships, valued at $5,000 per year.
These recipients will additionally receive financial support covering conference registration fees, travel and accommodation to the Pharmacy Assistant Conference for one year.
The partnership with TerryWhite Chemmart is another key component of this initiative.
In a bid to augment its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce, Symbion will extend an array of opportunities to each program participant.
These include options for degree-related placements, intern year placements at a TerryWhite Chemmart pharmacy, and employment opportunities during holiday periods.
Moreover, to ensure comprehensive support, each program participant will be assigned a mentor.
In recognition of their vital role, mentors will be compensated by Symbion, receiving $750 per annum for their supportive service.
This initiative holds the promise of a stronger, culturally responsive pharmacy service, which is crucial to meeting the specific health needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The deadline for applications is set for 16 July, and with such significant opportunities on offer, a high level of interest is expected.
More information on the initiative can be found at the Pharmacy Guild of Australia website.
