The Brisbane Lions have condemned a supporter of their club after the latest incident of racist abuse in the AFL.

On Tuesday the club issued a statement confirming their knowledge of "reports of inappropriate and disgusting racial language" from a Lions fan towards an opposition player at the weekend's Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash with the Gold Coast Suns.

Following an investigation, the offender was unable to be identified as they were in The Gabba's general admission seating.

"There is no place for racism in our game," the Lions said in their statement.

"The Club takes matters of racial and anti-social behaviour at our games seriously. Such behaviour is at odds with our values and the Club we aspire to be.

"Had we been able to identify the person, action such as revoking membership or banning them from attending Lions games in the future would have been taken."

The identity of the player who was subjected to the abuse has not been confirmed.

There have been a string of incidents in 2023 involving Indigenous players in Australia's sports codes being targetted by racists.

Young Western Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was subjected to vilification from the stands and over social media in round two, with similar experiences forced on Adelaide's Izak Rankine, Fremantle's Nathan Wilson and Michael Walters, Brisbane's Charlie Cameron, and Port Adelaide's Junior Rioli in the first half of the season.

South Sydney player Latrell Mitchell also copped racist abuse from a crowd member during a match against Penrith.

On May 6 the AFL announced lifetime bans from attending matches had been set in place for confirmed offenders.

Nine bans had already been issued in 2023 at the time of the announcement.

The Gold Coast Suns responded to the Lions' statement on Twitter.

"Thank you for your support...we'll continue to keep calling this vile behaviour out," the Suns wrote.

"Enough is enough."
