Alwyn Davey Jnr shows great signs of things to come on debut

Father-son draftee Alwyn Davey Jnr produced a handful of eye-catching moments during his AFL debut for Essendon in round one.

The 18-year-old lined up on a half forward flank and finished with nine disposals, three tackles and a goal in the Bombers' 59-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG.

Davey's debut came after solid form during the club's pre-season training and in the trial games over the past month.

The news was broken to him last week by his twin brother Jayden, who despite enduring a horror injury run over the past two years, is revelling in his brother's success.

"We have been close since we were little, especially these days now that we're more mature," Jayden told the National Indigenous Times last year.

"You do feel disappointed that you're not out there with him, but I am very supportive of his football."

The boys were selected by the Bombers under the father-so rule in last year's AFL National Draft.

Jayden is in the process of increasing his training load after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in April last year.

Both boys have spent the last few years boarding at the well-renowned 'footy factory' of Xavier College.

The twins' father Alwyn played 100 games in the red and black over a seven-year period from 2007 to 2013.

Alwyn Snr said that he was "really excited and happy" to present his son with the number 29 jumper and witness his debut live on Sunday.

"I was actually nervous myself, I had butterflies like I was playing still, but once I started talking it settled down and I was all good," he told essendonfc.com.au.

"A lot of family came down from Darwin and Adelaide and it's good to have their support as well.

"It has been a bit of a journey for me to get to 100 games to make the father-son cut-off and to the boys' credit, playing footy down in Melbourne has paid off from. I'm really proud for both boys."

While he has undoubtedly had a tremendous impact on his son's football, Alwyn Snr is now happy to sit back and watch as a spectator.

"I tried to give him some advice, but he was like 'Dad, I don't want to listen to it', so I just let him do his own thing," he said.

"It's their time now, so I'll just sit back and watch."

Alwyn and Jayden Davey's uncle Aaron was also in attendance on Sunday.

Aaron featured in 178 games across ten seasons for the Melbourne Demons and won the club's best-and-fairest award in 2009.
