Brendan Doggett made an impressive start to his test debut Friday, picking up two wickets.
Doggett, the third known Indigenous player to represent Australia in the men's test side, dismissed Harry Brook for his first scalp just as the dangerous young English batsman looked like racing away, on 52 from 61 balls.
He later removed bowling allrounder Brydon Carse for six. Carse, no mug with the bat, averaged over 24 in tests going into the match.
Doggett ended with 2/27 from seven overs in the first innings, with Mitchell Starc leading the way with career best test figures of 7/58 as England was rolled for 172.
Usman Khawaja's back spasms then caused mayhem at the top of Australia's batting order, with the veteran barred from opening after having spent too much time off the field.
The forced change in the order saw fellow debutante Jake Weatherald, the first Northern Territory born and raised player to crack the men's Test side, face the first over from Jofra Archer - falling to the second ball LBW on review.
Archer took 2/11, Carse 2/45 and England skipper Ben Stokes 5/23 including some wickets gifted by horrible shots, leaving Doggett - not out on zero - and Nathan Lyon, 3*, the tall task of rebuilding from nine down for 123 at stumps.
