A 42-year-old Aboriginal man died in custody on Saturday night.

The man was admitted to Kalgoorlie Hospital on June 9 following his reception into Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison where he presented with multiple health concerns, the WA Department of Justice said on Monday.

The man was transferred the next day by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Boorloo / Perth and according to the Department his condition "continued to deteriorate".

He died at Fiona Stanley Hospital on Saturday night.

Preliminary reports indicate there were no suspicious circumstances.

WA Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner.

More than 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody brought down its findings and issued more than 300 recommendations for reform, many still yet to be implemented, in 1991.
