A 16-year-old Indigenous boy who last week was found unresponsive in a Western Australian youth detention facility has passed away in hospital.

The boy had been detained at Unit 18, located on the grounds of Casuarina Prison, Western Australia's maximum security prison for male prisoners, when he was found unresponsive early last Thursday morning.

After being transferred to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, National Indigenous Times understands the boy's life support was turned off on Thursday evening.

A candlelight vigil was held for the teenager at Perth's Wellington Square Park on Wednesday evening.

The ABC reported earlier on Wednesday that the the boy's suicide attempt came 12 hours after he was told his bail hearing had been delayed for at least the third time.

"The Department of Justice wishes to express deepest sympathies to the boy's family, friends and community for their tragic loss," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Unit 18 has been shrouded in controversy since commencing operations in July, 2022.

Following commencement of operations, letters from detainees detailing abuse allegations from both Unit 18 and Banksia Hill Detention Centre surfaced.

A class action involving hundreds of former youth detainees in WA is currently underway.

National Indigenous Times has contacted Western Australia's Department of Justice and Western Australian Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Toni Buti for comment.

More to come.
