Lawyers for one-time listed Melbourne AFL footballer Daniel Hayes submitted an application on Friday in the Supreme Court of Victoria to a current standing writ issued 18 months ago against the AFL and Hayes' former youth assistant coach Mark Heaney.

The then Eastern Ranges under-18s mentor is alleged in 2005 to have plied alcohol before raping an intoxicated Hayes, now 35, inside the home of the accused following a post-match team gathering after other guests left the premises.

Heaney has previously denied the allegation from 2005.

Details behind the court documents in the civil matter are suspected to have been marked "restricted" on Friday.

A source in the Victorian legal system told the National Indigenous Times the judge could be considering suppressing in-court reporting once the trial begins.

Previous court documents in May 2023 from Hayes's legal team, Arnold Thomas Becker, alleged that: "As a result of the abuse, (Daniel Hayes) self-medicated with drugs and alcohol after the allegations".

Hayes has also made three separate suicide attempts on his life and "but for the abuse, (Hayes) would have continued with the Melbourne Demons", instead, he ultimately left the club without playing a senior game, despite a promising junior career.

In 2013, Heaney, then Northern New South Wales regional football manager, was fired and jailed over grooming an under-age junior player.

Hayes told reporters last year that seeing the case in the media left him feeling depressed for years; that he suffered sickness with guilt that he did not speak up.

"I felt bad, like maybe if I had said something earlier … that's something I'm holding on to," Hayes said.

"I should have come out and said it when it happened."
