A security vehicle stolen from an air force base has been tracked to a remote outback community where police have made three arrests.

The white Ford Ranger was stolen after a man allegedly entered RAAF Base Darwin on Monday afternoon and assaulted a security officer.

Police later saw the vehicle travelling south on the Stuart Highway, but officers lost sight of it 20km south of Darwin.

The vehicle has been linked to to a fuel drive-off in Coolalinga and a theft in Zuccoli in the early hours of Tuesday, with three people in the vehicle.

Police allege the car was used to travel to the remote Aboriginal community of Wadeye, 400km south of Darwin, where three males were arrested on Wednesday.

They remain in custody and are expected to be charged with multiple offences.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Burns said police suspected other people were also involved.

"Investigations into the theft, assault and subsequent offending remain ongoing," he said in a statement.
