More than 160 Traditional Owners, Aboriginal Rangers and WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions staff gathered in Boorloo / Perth this week for Western Australia's first Statewide Joint Management Forum.

The major event sought to strengthen partnerships and deliver stronger outcomes for WA's national parks, reserves and communities.

As the two-day forum concluded on Wednesday, the WA government said it is "committed to partnering with Traditional Owners to protect our land and waters", noting that joint management brings Traditional Owners and the government "together to protect and manage WA's national parks and reserves, combining cultural knowledge and contemporary conservation practices to care for Country".

The forum, co-designed by Traditional Owners and DBCA regional teams, provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss challenges and identify priorities to strengthen joint management across the State.

The forum highlighted the significant growth of joint management with Traditional Owners across WA, with almost 40 per cent of the WA's conservation estate now managed in partnership.

The government said the growth has been accelerated by its Plan for Our Parks initiative, which has created more than six million hectares of new conservation estate over the past six years. All new parks and reserves created through Plan for Our Parks are jointly or cooperatively managed with Traditional Owners.

WA Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn it was a privilege to open WA's first Statewide Joint Management Forum, bringing together Traditional Owners and conservation partners from across our State.

"The growth of joint management through the Cook Labor Government's Plan for Our Parks initiative has been extraordinary, ensuring Traditional Owners have a leading role in protecting and managing WA's national parks and reserves," he said.

"Joint management is delivering real outcomes on the ground, supporting employment and training opportunities for Traditional Owners involved in caring for Country.

"The relationships strengthened through this forum will support better decision-making and deliver stronger outcomes for our parks, reserves and communities across WA."

The minister thanked the Traditional Owners who travelled from across WA to participate in the forum.
