Striving to celebrate and profile the talent of young Indigenous models, last week Blaklist Agency launched its First Nations Model Pathways Program – known as Blaklist Next Gen.
Held at the State Library of Western Australia, November 6-10, the program was set out as a 1:1 week-long series of model mentoring workshops.
First Nations models Kahlia Rogers (Fitzroy Crossing, WA), Hayley Mulardy (Broome, WA) and Calli - Rose Woods (Turkey Creek, WA) were selected to take part in the 2023 program.
With the week's mentoring workshops led by established First Nations model Elaine George, workshop themes were based around empowerment, mentoring, portfolio, casting, self-care, hygiene, runway etiquette, social media and interview techniques.
The twelve month pathways program was designed to not only connect with national event platforms and open career pathways but create further development opportunities for interstate Western Australia and Northern Territory First Nations models.
Having completed the full program, each model will then be offered the opportunity to be signed by BlakList Agency.
Last weeks's program saw the three models discuss their modelling history, learn about the broader fashion industry, discuss the importance of self-care and presentation, undergo casting and social media workshops as well as MECCA beauty workshops and an ecommerce photoshoot.
Being both a program mentor and program ambassador, renowned First Nations model Elaine George is thrilled to have been able to guide and educate the girls on a series of valuable skills and industry knowledge.
"I'm excited to be an ambassador for Blaklist: Next Gen because we have beautiful talent throughout our remote communities but the industry doesn't take those trips to search for unique talent," George said.
"Firstly I didn't think the girls even knew who I was. I'm old enough to be their mother so it was just beautiful.
"The girls taught me a few things about their communities and just how remote they are to the big city. The one thing that touched my heart was how proud they are of their community and staying true to their cultural beliefs."
When discussing her personal views on the program George said it is much more than just a model program, being an industry first and project she is highly passionate about.
"I want the next generation to be able to walk in two worlds, identify/culture and the Western world. I think if there was just one black fella in the industry maybe things might have been different for me but I don't dwell on the past but learn from it, this is why I am passionate about this program," George told Style Up.
