A 27-year-old man died following a fight between two men on Galiwin'ku/ Elcho Island on the weekend.
Galiwin'ku is an island off the coast of Arnhem Land and home to a Yolŋu community.
About 12:32pm on Saturday, the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre received multiple reports of people fighting with weapons on the island. Further calls indicated one man was injured, bleeding and unconscious.
The injured man was taken to the Galiwin'ku clinic, where resuscitation efforts were undertaken by family members before clinic staff took over. Despite those efforts, he was declared deceased about 1:30pm.
The man had sustained a stab wound to his right upper leg and a laceration to his right lower arm below the elbow.
It is alleged that earlier the deceased and another man were fighting on the local oval at the time of the incident. The 19-year-old suspect was allegedly armed with a knife, while the deceased was armed with a stick or edged weapon.
The suspect was also injured during the fight and was taken to the clinic for treatment for a laceration to his wrist. He has since been arrested and remains in police custody. It is understood he was transported to Darwin last on Saturday.
Local police attended the clinic and assisted with resuscitation efforts. Members also engaged with community Elders to help calm a crowd that had gathered outside the clinic.
Detectives from the Territory Crime Division are travelling to Galiwin'ku and investigations are ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
