Geelong coach Chris Scott was full of praise for Cats youngster Lawson Humphries, who continued his impressive start to his AFL career in Friday night's win against Collingwood at the MCG.

The young West Australian was excellent in Geelong's 13.13 (91) to 10.11 (71) triumph over the Magpies, gathering 23 disposals at 95 per cent efficiency.

Humphries also took a game-high 13 marks, which included a couple of gutsy efforts running back into defence.

Scott noted Humphries' exquisite skills and ability to make good decisions with the football during his post-game press conference.

"You want it getting in his hands because he'll find someone," Scott said.

"He's slotted in really nicely, when we brought him in we'd been talking about him for a while.

"The opportunity opened up for us to get him in and we were always hopeful that we would sit back and go 'why didn't we find a way earlier?'.

Geelong's clash with Collingwood was the Nyul Nyul, Oomiday and Worrora man's third game at AFL level after already producing strong performances against Essendon and Hawthorn.

The Cats are undefeated from three matches with Humphries in the team, something that has not gone unnoticed by Scott.

"It's nice when a young player comes in and improves your team," he said.

"It's not always the case, even with the very best teams in the competition you're thinking 'how can we get some experience into some of our younger players?'

"Sometimes you need to take two steps back to take a step further, but we haven't had to do that with him."

The 21-year-old has had a meteoric rise having been plucked from West Australian Football League club Swan Districts and featuring in the club's reserves grand final win.

He was selected by Geelong with pick 63 in last year's AFL National Draft, and has shown tremendous form at VFL level across the 2024 season.

Scott said that he was always confident that Humphries would back a strong impact at senior level once given the opportunity.

"He's done what we have expected him to do, we had high expectations," Scott said.

"He has come in and impacted the way we play really positively."

Midfielder Jack Bowes said post-match he was impressed with the impact that his younger teammate has been able to have.

"Lawson has been awesome since he's come into the side, (he has) just so much composure for a young player," Bowes said.

"I'm still not sure what foot he kicks with, he's pretty neat on both sides."
