Meg Webb has been appointed SiS Tasmania's Manager for Family Domestic Violence.
A program operated by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service, SiS (Support. Information. Strength), provides holistic family violence support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service chief executive Jake Smith said Ms Webb brings significant experience to SiS Tasmania in supporting those who have experienced family domestic and sexual violence.
"Meg brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to support our team to deliver much needed services for our clients and communities," Mr Smith said.
"We are delighted to have Meg join the team in this leadership role, to work directly alongside our Principal Lawyer, and to support our non-legal staff across the state."
SiS, the only service of its type operating in Tasmania, provides dedicated legal and non-legal wrap around supports to Aboriginal people experiencing family, domestic and sexual violence.
The service's establishment comes as data suggests three in five Aboriginal women experience physical and sexual violence from a male intimate partner, with Aboriginal women 11 times more likely to lose their lives to assault than non-Aboriginal women.
Operating for its first full year in 2023-24, SiS supported 172 clients across a range of legal matters, with 867 SiS services delivered in total.
SiS also delivers prevention services via early intervention prevention activities and community legal education to women and girls across the state, with activities occurring at Mary Hutchinson Women's prison, schools and with community groups across the state.
Ms Webb said she was proud and excited to be joining the SiS team.
"I will be working alongside highly skilled, passionate and courageous team members at SiS Tasmania," she said.
"This role aligns deeply with my commitment to social justice, advocacy, and systemic change, particularly in addressing the disproportionate representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in family violence and legal systems.
"I look forward to working collaboratively to ensure our approach to improving system outcomes is inclusive, culturally safe and empowering of individuals, families and communities."
