Proud Dauareb man Charlie Kaddy is the new chief executive of the Torres Strait Regional Authority.
The federal government appointed Mr Caddy, from the Meriam Nation to the role for three years on Friday.
One of the main functions of the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is to strengthen the economic, social and cultural development of the peoples of the Torres Strait area.
Mr Kaddy has extensive experience in governance and leadership programs for the TSRA and has been acting chief executive of the authority since 2024.
He was previously the chief executive of the Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council and had the full backing of the TSRA board, which includes 20 elected First Nation members across its communities.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, senator Malarndirri McCarthy said Mr Caddy's appointment reflected the government's commitment to First Nations leadership in decision-making.
"His experience and knowledge of the Torres Strait region puts him in an excellent position to lead the TSRA and deliver positive outcomes for communities," she said.
"We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the TSRA to strengthen self-determination and economic opportunities for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people.
"I would also like to thank the TSRA Board, and former CEO Ms Vonda Malone, for their advocacy of all people living in the Torres Strait region."
The TSRA is a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 (ATSI Act).
The authority is uniquely placed to preserve Ailan Kastom (island custom), implement community programs, shape regional policies and provide culturally specific advice and support for Indigenous people living in the Torres Strait region.
