The First Peoples' Assembly has announced the election of Gunditjmara woman Lisa Briggs as the new Member for the metro region, following the resignation of Shane Charles last month.

Ms Briggs was officially recognised as the new member on Tuesday following a count-back by the Assembly's independent election provider of the 2023 elections.

Ms Briggs said she was honoured to join the Assembly, who will shortly begin negotiations with the state government over the Treaty process.

"I would like to see a Treaty that invests in our culture, lands and language as that is our foundation," she said.

Hailing from western Victoria, with connections to Framlingham and Lake Condah Mission, Ms Briggs is the current executive director of Ngaweeyan Maar-oo, who play a role in holding the Victorian government to account as a part of their Closing the Gap commitments.

She brings over 40 years' experience in public policy working in Indigenous affairs with the Aboriginal Community-Controlled sector.

"I have dedicated my life to serving our people through community initiated, community driven, community owned operations. That's what self-determination is all about," she said.

Assembly Co-chairs Ngarra Murray and Rueben Berg congratulated Ms Briggs on her election.

"Lisa will make a fantastic Metro Member, and on behalf of the Assembly we congratulate her," they said in a joint statement.

"She's stepping into this role at a critical point in the shared journey towards Treaty and will work with our diverse communities as we head into the upcoming negotiations with the Victorian government.

"Our message to all mob is: now is the time to really show your support and get involved."
