Andy Muirhead recently marked a milestone on a road trip to Brisbane in front of a mob of hometown support.

In his 100th appearance for the ACT Brumbies the Indigenous winger celebrated the 39-26 Super Rugby Pacific win over Queensland with family and friends only travelling a short distance to Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Muirhead was swamped over the sidelines after the final whistle by not only his mum and dad, siblings, and nephews and nieces, but also a legion of loyal mates that grew up with him.

"The reason why I moved away from Brisbane is to get away from these guys," Muirhead joked to Wallabies great and commentator Tim Horan.

"These are my best mates from school that turned up to remind me who I am."

Muirhead attended Brisbane State High School and clinched a Queensland Premier Rugby title for Souths before he took a chance and drove down in his Holden Ute to Canberra on the off chance of playing Super Rugby.

He had initially reached out to then-Brumbies assistant coach Dan McKellar a decade ago about the possibility of joining their ACT pre-season training block ahead of Christmas.

They liked what they saw in the 22-year-old and offered Muirhead a training deal worth just $250 a week until the start of the 2015 season with no further promises.

The prospect of not securing a contract did not perturb the late bloomer, who was never given an opportunity to trial for his home state, to stay on past the late February season kickoff and train for zilch.

But by May of that rookie year, he did everything right to earn a ticket on the plane to fly over for the South African and Argentinian legs of that year's Super Rugby campaign, debuting against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth before ending the tour scoring twice against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires.

Another 98 matches have clicked over the years and Muirhead's career has turned full circle.

"It's funny as I had a conversation with Dan McKellar this week and he sort of said, 'Remember when you came down and essentially trained on no money and look where you are now'," he said.

"I definitely didn't think I would even get to 50 games, let alone a 100.

"So, I am pretty stoked, and to be at such an amazing club like the Brumbies because they are really fond to my heart."

Playing the rare milestone after a decade away from home, he ran out in front of the close supporters that witnessed all of Muirhead's sacrifices to get so far including selection on the 2021 Wallabies tour of Europe.

"It's been an emotional week and funny I am sort of glad it's over," Muirhead said.

"Obviously being in the limelight is not something I really like, but to have all my family here is really quite special."

Rugby figures lined up to commemorate the night that Muirhead was lauded louder than ever before.

It coincided with Queensland captain Nate McDermott also turning out for his 100th game.

"Massive congrats to Andy Muirhead playing his 100th Super Rugby game for the Brums this weekend," ex-Brumbies coach and longtime club staffer, Laurie Fisher, posted on X.

"Such a consistent reliable and effective player.

"Genuine glue for the Brumbies over a number of years now. Great achievement."

Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa could not speak highly enough of Muirhead's time together in a post-game interview.

"It is pretty special – he's a special man," he said.

"He's someone who has given us so much to the club. He's a great leader and everyone respects him.

"We spoke about him briefly (before the game) and I was just proud that everyone put in a good effort for him."

Morgan Turunui in commentary went out of his way to pay tribute to not only the player, but the man he has turned into at the well-versed community club.

Muirhead had four carries over 16 metres, dished off an offload and got away three kicks for a 123-metre gain.

"It was a special evening for a really wonderful guy," Turunui said.

"He does a lot for the community in and around the ACT away from the game. He's such an outstanding footballer too.

"Andy had a really good, solid game tonight. Exactly what his team wanted from him."
