A reflection of our Indigenous businesses can be summarised in 3 words:
Organic, independent, opportunistic.
Organic - Australia is in the 'awareness' phase of our reconciliation journey. The modern cultures, are indeed, aware! There's a NAIDOC week, a Mabo day, a Sorry day - and of course, an Indigenous Business Month. What is very well established is an 'Us vs them', and 'in service to' approach when it comes to recognising the traditional world.
Business is booming, and organically so. The modern market is hungry for Aboriginal anything it seems. The genuine interest in our traditional cultures has seen an explosion of reconciliation action plans, sure - but on a deeper level, I think the average Aussie yearns for a connection. A connection that we as Indigenous people know very well and reflect through our business.
Independent - We are connected as communities, but sometimes siloed as businesses. This is not a bad thing - just an observation of mine.
Many contractors and sole traders offering a unique slice of culture is kwobidok (beautiful). I look forward to when these independents merge forces. Working together is more sustainable and will lead to greater integration of Indigenous culture into business as usual (It's coming!)
Opportunistic - The market is ripe and we are innovating. I am optimistic for the future growth of not only Indigenous business but how we can influence Australian business in a way that allows us all to participate in our shared culture. Traditional cultures like to share, it's a cyclical exchange. The greatest thing Indigenous cultures have taught me is relationships before the business. Sharing this is an opportunity for the modern Aussie to reflect on themselves as people, how you connect to us, Country, and most importantly - yourselves.
If you are an Indigenous business, keep going! Don't sell yourself short. There is much opportunity for you to not only grow but flourish. Australia needs you, walk with kwop kaart, koort, wirrin (good mind, heart spirit).
Indigenous Business Month is a helpful month to consider what Indigenous business can do for you as a business, but ultimately, Indigenous business throughout the other 11 months of the year is a helpful frame to consider what it can do for us as Australians.
