Concerns have been raised about the welfare of people incarcerated in Perth's Casuarina Prison, with allegations prisoners are "in lockdowns 24/7".

A Noongar woman contacted National Indigenous Times about her long-time partner, an Indigenous man, currently being held on remand.

"My partner is in Casuarina – and he is not guilty. I am very worried about him, he is suffering fits. They cancelled all the visits today and they're in lockdowns 24/7," she said on Tuesday.

"They get two phone calls a day, and it's not good for our Black people. One of my nephews passed away in that bloody prison.

"I am worried about my partner's safety and the safety of everyone else in there as well. There are too many people who have been dying in there."

She said her partner was facing stealing and trespassing charges but had not been convicted and had been incarcerated on remand for three months.

National Indigenous Times asked the WA Department of Justice about the cancellation of visits, whether prisoners were currently under lockdown, how often prisoners are under lockdown (and what lockdowns entail in terms of hours per day confined to cells), and how often visits are cancelled.

A Department spokesperson did not directly answer the questions.

"Prisons implement adaptive routines to ensure the safety and security of prisoners and staff," they said.

"On these occasions activities including social visits may not be able to take place and time out of cells can be temporarily reduced.

"Under an adaptive routine at Casuarina Prison on Tuesday, 10 June the afternoon visits session was called off. Prisoners continued to have time out of cells and access to telephone calls."

More to come.
