ReefTO, in partnership with Mob Made Media & Communications Agency, has launched its inaugural Voices of the Reef Ambassador Program, a digital storytelling initiative supporting Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef to "capture and share their stories, perspectives and knowledge of Sea Country".

ReefTO is now inviting Expressions of Interest from Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners who are passionate about storytelling, digital content and the future of Sea Country.

Taking place in Port Douglas from the 10 -14 August, the program is designed to equip participants with practical digital storytelling skills, from digital truth-telling and mobile journalism, to managing and safeguarding cultural knowledge.

Participants will also explore pathways in media, partnerships and paid content opportunities.

ReefTO describes the program as "built by mob, for mob", creating "a culturally grounded space where participants can build real-world skills, amplify their voice and step confidently into digital spaces".

Each ambassador will receive a Mojo Kit of storytelling equipment and support to build a professional content portfolio. Following the five-day program, ambassadors will be mentored through creating original content between August and December 2026.

ReefTO Co-Chair Manuwuri Forester said the program responds directly to calls from Reef Traditional Owners.

"At last year's Sea Country Forum, Traditional Owners were clear that our stories must be told by us, our way, grounded in our own cultural authority. Voices of the Reef responds to that by supporting mob to share stories of Sea Country with strength, care and respect," she said.

"This comes back to ReefTO's values of honour, respect and hope. When mob tell their own stories, all three are present."

The program will be facilitated by Talicia Minniecon, founder of Mob Made Media & Communications Agency and a proud Kabi Kabi, Gooreng Gooreng, Zenadth Kes and Oceania woman. T

Ms Minniecon is a strong advocate for First Nations voices in digital spaces and believes digital storytelling is not just about creating content.

"For thousands of years First Nations peoples have carried knowledge, culture and history through storytelling," she said.

"Today, digital platforms can be used like 21st century message sticks. Tools that allow communities to document their truths, stories, share knowledge and communicate with local, national and global audiences."

The program is open to Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners aged 18 and over, living in Queensland. Applications close 5pm Monday 29 June 2026. More information about the program ad applying is available online.
