Former Geelong and Brisbane midfielder Allen Christensen has signed on to coach Southern Football League club Hobart for two seasons.

The appointment will also see the ex-AFL player serve as the club's Junior Development Officer where he will engage local primary schools within the Tigers' zone.

Upon retiring from the elite level, Christensen has spent the past four seasons with Tasmanian State League club Lauderdale, which includes leading the club as playing-coach for the last two years.

In 2024, he steered the Bombers to a grand final appearance, where they lost to North Lauderdale by 20 points.

Christensen – a Tiwi man that grew up in the Victorian town of Lara – said via the club's social media that he is looking forward to playing a role in developing the clubs up-and-coming footballers.

"I'm stoked to be joining Hobart in roles that are both equally important," Christensen said.

"I'm looking forward to using my strengths to develop young players from Auskick through to the senior group to try and create an environment that's fun but successful again."

Christensen – a 2011 premiership player with Geelong – called time on his AFL career at the end of the 2020 season after playing 133 games.

A skilful midfielder capable of winning plenty of the footy, Christensen was also creative in front of goal.

Current recruiting officer and outgoing coach Dan Gray said that he is excited about having the 33-year-old on-board.

"It was really critical that we selected a coach that aligns with our values; we are in the business of recruiting sound characters across all the departments," Gray said.

"Bundy is easily liked; he's a warm character who understands the value of community.

"He'll bring a fresh approach, with elements of fun, empowerment and accountability."

Hobart finished second-bottom on the ladder in the 2024 SFL season with just two wins from 16 games, but the club's president Josh Munting told The Mercury that Christensen's appointment could attract new faces to the club.

"I think there will be a few players that will look to come up," Munting said.

"(But) we're not looking for sort of wholesale movement, we've got a list here that are committed.

"We want to teach them the game, continue to build the culture and to top up with some talent that gives us some competitiveness on field that perhaps we lacked at points this year."
