Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine is reportedly the victim of multiple alleged threatening messages sent online, resulting in a 31-year-old Adelaide man being arrested by police.

In a statement on Tuesday, South Australia Police announced the man, from Kensington Gardens in Adelaide, was arrested on Monday over five alleged messages sent to a 25-year-old man via social media following a "lengthy investigation by the SAPOL Cybercrime Investigation Section".

The matter was reported to police by the victim.

"The man was charged with using a carriage service in an offensive manner and bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 30 January," SAPOL said.

Reports on Tuesday have identified Rankine as the target of the messages.

There has been no public confirmation from South Australia Police nor the Adelaide Football club on who was subjected to the threatening messages.

In a statement the Crows confirm two club players, unnamed, "were subject to direct and significant threats on a social media platform".

"Subsequently, reports were made to South Australia Police in September which prompted investigations," the club added.

"The AFL Integrity Unit was advised of the matters and both players have been provided with the necessary and ongoing support.

"Any form of online abuse, discrimination or threatening behaviour is unacceptable and it has no place in our society."

Rankine had previously been the victim of racial abuse earlier in his career.

The September timeline aligns with the period Rankine spent sidelined with a four match ban for a "highly offensive homophobic slur" directed towards a Collingwood player during a round 23 match.

Rankine later fronted the media to apologise, committing to better himself and stating "I am in no way a victim".

He later met with club LGBTQIA+ supporter group Rainbow Crows.

The ban saw Rankine miss the final game of the home and away season as well as Adelaide's two finals games, which saw the minor premiers knocked out in straight sets.
