Hawthorn breakout midfielder Mattea Breed is poised to join Collingwood in the final two days of the AFLW trade period.

Breed is prepared to move from the Hawks, who finished the home and away season in second with a 10-1 record, to the wooden spooners as she pursues more on-field responsibility following an impressive second campaign at Waverley Park.

The mature-age recruit from Darwin found a home as a centre-bounce midfielder under new Hawthorn coach Daniel Webster, but was initially only offered the basement-level tier four contract to remain at the club and began exploring interest from rival clubs midway through the season.

The Hawks upped their offer in recent weeks, but it was understood Breed, 23, was eager to get to the Magpies where she could form a powerful midfield combination with captain Bri Davey and reigning best and fairest Ruby Schleicher.

Already flush with midfield talent including captain Emily Bates, Jasmine Fleming and Eliza West, Hawthorn was expected to agree to a deal for Breed, who averaged 14 disposals, five tackles and four clearances per game this season.
