The shores of Summer Bay are about to welcome some colour as newcomer Kyle Shilling joins their cast in their upcoming season.

The Widjubal man of the Bunjalung Nation is a triple threat with his background as a musician, dancer and actor and will be the show's first ever Indigenous main character.

Shilling joined Bangarra Dance Theatre in 2015 and has a multitude of experience in local productions including Man with the Iron Neck, Role Model and Black Cockatoo.

Also a well-known rapper, Shilling goes by the stage name BLACX which has seen him featured on Triple J's unearthed.

In his first major Australian TV role Shilling is set to play the character of Mali Hudson in Australia's leading soap opera, the 28-year-old announced the news personally on Instagram:

"It's official ladies and gentlemen. Stoked to be a part of the amazing family/team of @homeandaway. It's been nothing but an absolute privilege to work with everyone involved. Can't wait for you all to see the story of 'Mali Hudson'."

Producers from the Seven Network have been working with an Aboriginal script consultant who has played a role in creative decisions and how Mali will be introduced to viewers. A vital part in the conception of Shilling's on-screen character and his storylines this will support positive Indigenous representation on screen. It is said that he will join the coastal community through a link with a Summer Bay favourite.

Home and Away is known as a launching pad for those looking for stardom and Shilling may just find himself following the lead of some of its alumni including Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher, Heath Ledger, Kate Ritchie, Danni Minogue and many more.

Home and Away returns to the small screen on January 9, 2023 before celebrating its 35th anniversary.
