Jillaroos coach Jess Skinner has pressed for Australian rugby league to have a pre-game ceremony that honours Indigenous culture.

The First Nations woman has admired the way Pacific teams in the tournament have celebrated their heritage before a kick-off, and hopes Australia can implement a similar practice in the future.

Asked about an Australian pre-game cultural ceremony, Skinner said: "I'd love to be able to see it as a First Nations woman and as a proud Australian.

"We have such beautiful, rich culture here, the longest living culture, but also really modern and diverse, so we're really proud of that."

Australia has witnessed the performances of the Samoan siva tau and a Fijian hymn so far in the tournament, and will come face-to-face with the haka before their World Cup final against New Zealand.

"We get so excited in those moments when there is a haka or when there is a hymn being sung," the Barkindji woman said.

"It's something that we do embrace and celebrate, particularly tonight's hymn.

"What Fiji have done, the storytelling that they've done for their nation and what they've done across this Rugby League World Cup is inspiring."

Captain Isabelle Kelly was also complimentary of the Fijian pride on display before kick-off in their semi-final on Sunday, which Australia won 30-14.

"It was beautiful," Kelly said of the Fijian hymn.

"It was a strange feeling knowing you're about to come up against them as you're admiring everything that they're doing."

The Jillaroos do proudly celebrate the nation's multicultural identity by donning the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the Australian flag while singing the national anthem before a match.

And the Australians have another song that they sing behind closed doors for important occasions.

"We do sing a hymn in momentous moments for us that we were gifted from the Torres Strait," Skinner said.

At the 2022 World Cup, Wiradjuri and Gunggandji man Josh Addo-Carr revealed that he also believes Australia deserves a pre-game ceremony to honour Indigenous culture.

Skinner's call comes ahead of the biggest moment of all, with the Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns to contest the World Cup final for a fifth straight tournament.

The Jillaroos coach said her side's hard-fought come-from-behind win over Fiji was the perfect preparation before Sunday's final.

"New Zealand will be physical just like the Fijian girls," Skinner said.

"It definitely helps us prepare. There's a lot of learnings that we'll take from tonight and rebuild."
