Six Victorian Aboriginal-led child and family programs have received funding boosts to help provide better access to culturally safe services.
The funding, which comes as part of the state government's Aboriginal Children and Families Innovation and Learning Fund, will see $2.3 million in support for support Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) across the state that advance Indigenous self-determination in the children and families service system.
The six organisations announced by Children's Minister Lizzie Blandthorn at the Aboriginal Children's Forum on Thursday are the Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative, Njernda Aboriginal Corporation, Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Op and Victorian Aboriginal Children and Young People's Alliance.
Minister for Treaty and First Peoples, Natalie Hutchins said the delivering of culturally sensitive care, with self-determination at the core, will "enable Aboriginal children and families to make decisions that deliver good outcomes for their communities".
The Victorian Aboriginal Children and Young People's Alliance will have funding delivered to help develop a new residential care model based on the Palm Island model.
It will focus on connection to community and family, with the residential care spaces to be staffed with local people so children are able to maintain strong connections to the community.
The Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative will use the funding to help deliver cultural education sessions in primary schools across western Melbourne and Victoria.
This will enable children to retain their sense of identity, with the program also seeking to identity families and children at risk of having child safety intervene.
The Njernda Aboriginal Corporation will receive funding to run Cultural Healing Groups to help break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and family violence, with participants to yarn, support one another and receive resources to build practical skills.
