'Whatever position I might be, then I'll do it': Walsh takes team-first attitude into Origin recall

A Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga on-field combination would be a "scary" sight for the Blues, the recalled Bronco says after returning to the Maroons squad for Origin II.

It's not clear what kind of inclusion awaits Walsh or who was left out of Billy Slater's plans from the series opener a fortnight ago, however the 23-year-old is certain of his role to do the 'team thing', whether in camp or on the field.

"I can bring that spark, I can bring that point of difference. I think tired bodies, that's something I hunt for in games," Walsh told reporters if brought into the Maroons lineup for next Wednesday's must-win game in Melbourne.

Aided by Ponga's second half send-off, the Blues staged a historic comeback to steal a 1-nil lead at the death.

"I do play a minute, if I play a long time, whatever it is, I'm prepared to do it for the team," Walsh said.

Walsh was named at no.18 in Slater's Queensland squad announced at the start of the week.

Last year, he watched his state claim the shield from the bench in game three having not appeared throughout the series.

However new six-man interchange rules could see him make a return at the MCG.

Speaking of his usual rival for the Maroons' no.1 jumper, Ponga, Walsh said: "Us together would be pretty cool. I think it would be pretty scary, to be honest."

"I know he works hard, and I want to do the same thing, work hard, and earn that opportunity," he said.

Walsh, who played in halves until his late teens, is being floated as a potential utility option.

Speaking on Monday, Slater hinted at the potential of him playing minutes at half back or five-eighth.

"Obviously it's a bit different in the NRL (compared to playing halves as a junior), but the way I watch footy and the detail that I go into about footy, I wouldn't be shy of stepping into that position. There's a lot of great players out there that will make you know my job easy anywhere I go," Slater said.

Whether it's as a 'super sub' or anywhere else, Walsh said he's prepared to do whatever is needed of him.

"I just want to go out there and, honestly, just do what's best for the team. So, whether that might be in the front row, on the wing, or in the halves, or whatever it might be," he said.

"That's where my mindset's at. Preparing myself, but also preparing the boys, and if I get an opportunity to go out there and do a job in whatever position I might be, then I'll do it."

Walsh was one of two additions to the Maroons squad, alongside Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi.

After their game one squad was announced, Slater said it was a difficult decision to leave out Walsh, who he said was probably the side's most influential player in the 2023 series.

"It's massive to be able to be a sponge around Bill. He's got so much detail, so much knowledge in the game, he's obviously been there and done it, so you know, to be able to rub shoulders with someone like that (the coaching staff and other players)...that's something that I really enjoy about this week," Walsh said of the Maroons coach.

Walsh has played five State of Origin games, his last in 2024.

For the Blues, coach and Indigenous Team of the Century half Laurie Daley has been forced to make a couple of changes to the look of his NSW squad.

Knights second rower Dylan Lucas is set for an Origin debut, coming in at the expense of Haumole Olakau'atu - who has been pushed to 20th man.

Starring in patches off the bench, Casey McLean will start in the centres after Stephen Crighton was ruled out with injury, with Mark Nawaqanitawase coming into camp.

Kotoni Staggs has retained his spot in the other centre position.

Queensland will attempt to level the series at the MCG on June 17.
