The National NAIDOC Committee has announced the 2026 National NAIDOC Awards will be held in August rather than during NAIDOC Week, with the ceremony to take place in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.
Traditionally held on the Saturday of NAIDOC Week, the awards will be held this year on August 15. NAIDOC Week itself will continue as planned from July 5 to July 12 under the theme "Fifty Years of Deadly".
In a statement, the committee said the change would "provide the best opportunity to deliver an event that reflects the significance of this historic milestone and brings people together".
National NAIDOC Committee co-chair Steven Satour said the 50th anniversary was a significant occasion for First Nations communities.
"Fifty Years of Deadly is a remarkable milestone for NAIDOC and for our communities," Mr Satour said.
"The Committee wants to ensure this celebration is delivered in a way that reflects the significance of the occasion and provides the opportunity for people from across the country to come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence."
Finalists for the National NAIDOC Awards will still be announced during NAIDOC Week, with winners revealed at the ceremony in Mparntwe on August 15.
The committee said it remained "committed to delivering a fitting celebration of this milestone and thanks nominees, finalists, sponsors, partners, volunteers and communities for their understanding and ongoing support".
Fellow NAIDOC Committee co-chair Aunty Lynette Riley said the anniversary marked an important moment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
"The Committee is committed to ensuring this anniversary is celebrated in a way that reflects its significance and honours the generations of people who have contributed to the NAIDOC journey," Professor Riley said.
"We look forward to recognising our finalists and bringing communities together to celebrate the achievements, leadership and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples."
