Buddy Franklin makes history twice in one match

Lance Franklin reached two remarkable milestones on Thursday evening at the SCG, though St Kilda spoiled the party with a late surge.

In what is Buddy's 19th season of AFL football, including nine years at Hawthorn, Franklin turned back time to collect another unique piece of goalkicking history.

The Noongar man moved to fourth spot on the all-time greatest goalkickers list dating back to 1897 while on the same night celebrating his 350th AFL match.

He became the 22nd player to reach 350 senior VFL/AFL games and just the fourth Aboriginal star behind Shaun Burgoyne (407), Adam Goodes (372) and Eddie Betts (350).

The Sydney spearhead kicked two goals in the second term on his way to 1058 career goals, surpassing the tally of Geelong and North Melbourne full forward Doug Wade.

Only Tony Lockett (1360), Gordon Coventry (1299) and Jason Dunstall (1254) have scored more goals in the VFL/AFL than Franklin.

But plaudits for the 36-year-old's new record that added to his long list of accolades in the game had to be put on hold in Thursday's Pride clash amid a Saints fightback.

The visitors managed 10 goals to four after Franklin's last for the night, including five of the match's final seven goals to stun the home crowd in a 12.8 (80) to 9.12 (66) win.

Franklin previously had memorable 200th and 250th games, both of them against St Kilda, finishing with nine and four goals respectively, but Callum Wilkie's defensive presence ensured this milestone game did not end in a triumph for the Swans.

Teammates sought out Franklin early with repeated inside 50 entries, but none stuck and the ineffectiveness left Sydney without scoring a point in the first term and only the club's second scoreless quarter ever at the SCG since South Melbourne's relocation in 1982.

After Sydney waited 40 minutes for its first goal, the sixth man to kick 1000 VFL/AFL goals finally broke the mark of Wade, who once only sat second behind Coventry.

The second for the hosts was Franklin's first, juggling the mark amid a contest against both Dougal Howard and Wilkie.

The left-foot drop punt sailed through the same end of his 1000th goal last season to a quieter but still rapturous reception.

The second for Franklin against the Saints delivered a 14-point lead, but his efforts were not enough against the mob from Moorabbin.

St Kilda's Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was statistically the third most effective player on the SCG with 20 kicks, 10 handballs, nine marks and a crucial last-term goal under pressure.

Bradley Hill also had an influence on the game with 19 disposals, Jade Gresham picked up 18 and Marcus Windhager on his return, after a month on the outer, had 15 touches.
