An Aboriginal man has died in custody in Western Australia.

The 51-year-old, who was incarcerated at Casuarina Prison, south of Perth, died in hospital on Wednesday morning.

He was terminally ill, and had been transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital by ambulance in the early hours of the morning.

Since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, close to 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody in Australia.

WA Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner.
