A young Aboriginal man being held in Western Australia's Casuarina Prison has died in custody.
The 29-year-old man was found unresponsive in his prison cell on Monday morning.
Staff and St John Ambulance paramedics provided emergency care on site before he was transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital.
The young man died in hospital around 6pm on Friday night, WA's Department of Justice confirmed on Saturday morning.
As is mandatory for all deaths in custody, WA Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner.
The Department said support has been provided to staff and prisoners impacted by the death.
More than 500 Indigenous people have died in custody across Australia since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody brought down its findings in 1991.
The Royal Commission made over 300 recommendations, many of which remain unimplemented to this day.
