Queensland artist Archie Moore to represent Australia at Venice Biennale 2024

Joseph Guenzler -

Contemporary artist Archie Moore will represent Australia at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte) in 2024.

The Kamilaroi/Bigambul man's exhibition will be curated by Ellie Buttrose, curator of contemporary Australian art at the Queensland Art Gallery's Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane.

The Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) is an international cultural exhibition hosted annually in Venice, Italy by the Biennale Foundation.

It is the world's oldest, and arguably biggest, international contemporary visual art event.

Based in Redlands, Queensland, Moore has not released any details of his proposed exhibition though he is confident his exhibition won't disappoint.

While his artistic practice reflects his personal background and confronts Australia's national history, the powerful picture that it paints about the need for justice can be extrapolated worldwide.

"Thank you all for your tremendous belief in my proposed work for the Australia Pavilion at the Venice Biennale behemoth," Archie Moore said.

"I would like to express my deep gratitude to all involved in making my team's proposal the successful project for 2024," he said.

His 2022 work Inert State involved 200 redacted coroner's reports detailing the death of an Indigenous person in custody being scattered in a pool at Queensland Art Gallery, all dating since 2008, the year then prime minister, Kevin Rudd, issued the apology to the Stolen Generations.

Joined by Moore is Curator of Contemporary Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery, Eliie Buttrose.

"I feel honoured that Archie has entrusted me to curate such a significant exhibition.

Buttrose describes Moore as "singular in his ability to engage audiences on an emotional level through memories and familial stories in artworks that stimulate discussion about how we bear the responsibility for social change."

"Exhibiting at the Venice Biennale provides a timely and critical opportunity for Archie's practice,

"Offering an artistic outcome that will emotionally connect international audiences with the imperative act of truth-telling," she said.

Australia's representation within the Venice Biennale has been philanthropically supported since the early 1980s.

In 2024, this co-investment approach is led by the Australia Council Chair and Chair of the Venice Biennale Ambassadors, Mr Robert Morgan, who said:

"Australia's participation at the Venice Biennale is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by successfully bringing together public and private investment.

"The project builds a like-minded community of advocates championing the bold and ambitious intentions of what is unique to contemporary visual arts in Australia and provides a platform to showcase this to the world."

Federal Minister for the Arts, the Hon Tony Burke MP noted that "you only have to look at the installation work of Archie Moore to imagine what a perfect choice this is for Australia's exhibition at the Venice Biennale and how perfect the Australian pavilion is to host this work."

"The Australian Government committed in our National Cultural Policy – Revive – to put First Nations at the centre of Australia's cultural heart," he said

"Opportunities like these help us to understand more about ourselves as Australians, more about each other, and help the world get to know us,' he said.
