Fitzroy Crossing's youth Night Place enjoyed its first Christmas with a celebration of four months of success.

The Night Place was established by Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal resource centre to provide an engaging, fun and supportive venue for children and young people in the Kimberley town.

The Place, established with the support of WA Police and Leedal, has been popular with local kids and has coincided with a remarkable decrease in offending in Fitzroy Crossing.

Last month the WA government threw its support behind the Night Place, providing funding to extend its operations for at least two years.

On 22 December, 73 young people attended the first Christmas at the Night Place.

In the lead up to Christmas the young people had decorated the Christmas tree with a Kimberley flavour, hand painted boab nuts, and made Christmas cookies as gifts for some of the Night Place partners.

The young people were treated to a two-course dinner prepared by the Fitzroy River Lodge and donated by local Aboriginal business Leedal Pty Ltd.

Marra Worra Worra General Manager of Programs Nicola Angell said: "After four months of operations it was lovely to celebrate Christmas with our staff, partner organisations and most importantly our children in our Night Place for the first time."

"The evening was full of love, laughter, great food and gift giving. I'm sure it will be the first of many Night Place Christmases," she said.

After dinner each child received a Christmas gift and a pair of shoes and socks donated by MWW and local community member Terri Leeson's church.

Local Fitzroy Crossing police also attended to assist and join in the festivities.
