Western Australia Department of Justice staff are reportedly trying to get three young inmates to climb down from the roof of the notorious Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre.

Vision captured by the 7NEWS helicopter showed the children on the roof of the facility on Friday afternoon, appearing to carry bricks.

Banksia Hill has long been the centre of controversy, with high rates of self-harm revealed in 2022 and over 50 letters of complaint lodged by the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA in 2023.

The centre, in which Indigenous children are severely over-represented, is the subject of an ongoing class action by current and former detainees.

It is understood there has been some damage to the facility.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice told Perth Now staff were "monitoring the situation".

"There is no risk to the wider public," the spokesperson said.

The maximum-security facility houses sentenced and unsentenced boys and girls in separate units and, apart from Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison, is the only detention centre for children in the state.
