Children at the Garma youth forum have given Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a good-hearted grilling.

After welcoming the prime minister to the young people's section of the Aboriginal cultural festival in northeast Arnhem Land on Saturday, the kids asked him questions worthy of their favourite news program, Behind the News.

Pete from Nhulunbuy wanted to know why Mr Albanese hadn't appeared on BTN.

"Because they haven't asked me," Mr Albanese said with a big smile and turning towards the adult reporter holding a BTN microphone.

"But I bet this will be on it next week – and children from Nhulunbuy and from Marrickville, where I'm from, will get to see it."

Xavier, also from Nhulunbuy, asked Mr Albanese what it was like being prime minister.

"It is an incredible privilege that I was not expecting when I was your age," Mr Albanese said, adding that being PM carries both great honour and responsibility.

"It can be frustrating because you can't click your fingers and change everything overnight but you can make a difference and that's what my government is trying to do.

"I hope we have two or three prime ministers here because one day one of you could be the prime minister."
