Members of the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council community recently came together in Cherbourg — an Aboriginal community about 250 kilometres north-west of Magandjin / Brisbane — for an RUOK? march and memorial service.

The event aimed to encourage connection, conversation and support around mental health.

According to the Council, the event began at Memorial Park before community members walked together along Barambah Avenue to Wakka Wakka Park.

The Council said the gathering included guest speakers as well as local residents who "bravely shared their own experiences with suicide and loss".

"There were honest conversations, raw moments, and a lot of heart," the organisation said in a statement.

"For some, speaking up took real courage."

The event also included a tree planting ceremony and a shared lunch, giving community members time to reflect and support one another.

The Council thanked the Cherbourg SPAN Group and local service providers who took part in the day, alongside residents who shared their stories publicly.

"We hope today offered some comfort, connection, and a message that no one has to carry things alone," the organisation said.
