Swans defender Lewis Melican has copped a three-week ban for a swinging arm during Sunday's Sydney Derby which ended Bunuba Giant Toby Bedford's afternoon early.

Bedford was subbed out in the second quarter after being struck in the face and hitting the SCG turf hard.

The Swans lodged their fifth-straight derby win and handed GWS a third consecutive loss - while snapping their own poor run of form, over their now cross-town rivals 12.15 (87) - 10.13 (73).

Giants coach Adam Kingsley said he'd been told Bedford avoided concussion but had blurry vision following the incident, which saw him take no further place in the game.

Bench vision showed Bedford with a bloodshot and closed-over right eye.

On Monday Melican was handed three weeks for striking by the MRO.

The 'careless conduct' and 'high contact' received a 'severe impact'.

"Lewis has probably got an immaculate record the way he plays his footy. He isn't malicious. He's always been a ball player, and that's why we love having to be our footy club," Sydney coach Dean Cox said post match.

"That'll play out in the next couple of days. You want to back your players in that they play at a level that doesn't step over the mark."
