Local Indigenous organisations in Fitzroy Valley are working to solve grave problems caused by mass flooding in the area including food shortages and a lack of health services.

Leedal Foundation, Marra Worra Worra Resource Centre and Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Group have also united to raise funds for flood relief.

Peter Murray, chief executive of Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation, is a director of Leedal and chair of the Marra Worra Worra board.

"The situation is I just got into Bayulu today because the water dropped a bit, I got in this morning and found the store's shelves were empty," he told National Indigenous Times on Friday.

"When the roads opened up on the east side people from the other communities rushed into Bayulu, going into the store and then the shelves were left empty.

"I started looking around and said we need to get help from the state, from the SES. What happened in Fitzroy Crossing today with food drops, we need that on this side as well."

Bayulu is about 13 km outside of the township and the supermarket there caters to eight other surrounding communities.

"Everyone in town up today I tried to have a meeting with Bayulu council to see what their understanding was of a plan for food and supplies. The store manager was under a lot of pressure, and there was no manpower to assist her with managing the shop and getting food moving," Mr Murray said.

"We got here and tried to push the council to speak up and stand up. We can't just sit quietly on this side.

"We have about 300-500 people on this side who need food. There are about 120 houses in this community itself, plus the other communities as well. We just want those services here in Bayulu, we need to get the food in. The next step is we will be trying to get trucks in to fill the shelves."

Mr Murray said funding for food was not an immediate issue, but moving and delivering food is the challenge.

He said health was emerging as a serious problem in the aftermath of the massive flooding.

"Bayulu community doesn't have any health assistance… people gave me big lists of what medications are needed for people in each community and we worked to get those papers to the right people in Fitzroy Crossing to get the medicines as well, people are running low on their medicines, these are elderly people," he said.

"There is no one from the health department to assist us.

"We have a clinic in Bayulu which is empty, it is not staffed, and we really need someone here 24/7 because after the flood we are going to have issues with waste management, waste piling up, and with the sewerage as well potentially because of the flood waters. There will be diseases and the nearest clinic is about 120km out of town."

Mr Murray said that due to flooding creeks, the nearest accessible town with food, fuel and health services is Halls Creek, 300km away.

"A lot of these people don't have cars. Luckily, I was able to drive in with my work car, and I brought my boat as well to do fuel runs into town to help people with food drops," he said.

"Marra Worra Worra Resource Centre, there are six to eight communities that are members, and we are trying to cater for our members but we can't continue to go it alone when this is a state emergency, we need the state to cater to the whole Fitzroy valley, the wider community – that is a state problem.

"We can't continually rely on our own Indigenous organisations, Leedal and Marra Worra Worra in town, there needs to be more done in terms of services from the government regarding food supply, emergency packs, and above all health – number one is health."

National Indigenous Times has contacted the state and federal governments for comment.
