A senior Larrakia Traditional Owner has resigned from his key position with the Darwin Waterfront Corporation in protest at the new NT government's plans to imprison children as young as 10.
In October, the CLP government lowered the age of criminal responsibility in the Territory to 10.
Medical and justice experts agree that 14 is an appropriate age and world's best practice for criminal responsibility.
On Monday, Dr Fejo resigned as chairperson of the Darwin Waterfront Corporation, a position he had held for four years.
"Today I resigned as chairman of the Darwin Waterfront corporation in protest because I refuse to work for a government who is responsible for locking up 10 year old children when everyone knows damn well that Don Dale is full of Aboriginal children," he said.
Indigenous children are drastically over-represented in the Northern Territory's youth justice system.
"I will take my place with my people and make a very clear statement that I will not play any part in the persecution of my people," Dr Fejo said.
A report published last month by the Northern Territory Child Commissioner found every child under 14 incarcerated in the NT had had a past interaction with the Child Protection system, and 94 per cent had been exposed to domestic and/or family violence.
The 2017 Royal Commission and Board of Inquiry into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory, called for by then Liberal PM Malcolm Turnbull and CLP Chief Minister Adam Giles, recommended the age of criminal responsibility in the Territory be raised from 10 to 12, a measure that was subsequently implemented by the Labor NT government.
