Latrell Mitchell is set to make a playing appearance before the end of the NRL season, with the Rabbitohs reportedly clearing their fullback to feature at the Koori Knockout over the first weekend of October.

The Knockout, hosted in Bathurst this year between October 4-7, falls across the same weekend of the national competition's grand final, beginning on the Friday and wrapping up on the public holiday Monday.

It comes amid the Rabbitohs desperate bid to see Mitchell's one-game ban as a result of a leaked photo served in the club's final match for the season against the Roosters this weekend.

The Bunnies have attempted to prove the 27-year-old's availability on return from injury, which would see him sit out of Friday's game but made available for round one in 2025 after being previously ruled out for the season by current coach Ben Hornby.

Last month, Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga all but confirmed Mitchell wouldn't feature for the national side in the Pacific Series, clearing the Indigenous All Stars captain's early post-season schedule.

On Wednesday, Fox Sports reported Souths have given Mitchell the green light to play at the Knockout, via text messages exchanged with club chief executive Blake Solly.

"Latrell is fit and available to play. We support the tournament and any of our players who are fit, available and want to play; we support them playing in it," Solly responded, as reported by Fox Sports.

"It's an important event for them and the community."

Speaking on the Koori Knockout, Mitchell revealed he was set to "go back home" and run out for Taree at this year's tournament.

He represented Newcastle Yowies on the Central Coast in 2023.

Bunnies teammates Cody Walker, Isaiah Tass and Jack Wighton featured amongst other past and present NRL stars at the carnival, won by Walgett Aboriginal Connection.

Mitchell has spent the back end of 2024 on the sidelines, including NSW's State of Origin comeback with a foot injury.
