Victorian Legal Aid has launched a new legal helpline to provide free, confidential, and culturally safe legal support for First Nations people across Victoria.
The new service — 1300 MOB VLA (1300 662 852) — aims to improve access to justice and strengthen culturally safe legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
First Nations Access Manager Isabella Unwin said the helpline was designed with community input and leadership.
"It's led by mob, for mob," she said.
Ms Unwin, a Noongar woman, said VLA's trained staff "recognise and respect the cultural identity, lived experience and the unique needs of First Nations clients".
"The service supports our communities to take control of their legal issues, understand their rights and make informed decisions; on their own terms," she said.
The service was co-designed with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) and Djirra, with support from Yamagigu Consulting, and is intended to complement existing Aboriginal-led legal services.
Lived experience experts who contributed to the helpline's development said accessing legal services had often felt like navigating a "minefield".
"This will be of great benefit to the community, many people don't know about legal aid until they actually need it," they said.
"The whole experience is about providing safety to people."
The helpline offers legal advice and information tailored to First Nations people and includes warm referrals to culturally safe support services.
1300 MOB VLA (1300 662 852) is available Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm, or through an online call-back request form.
