Latrell Mitchell spoke directly to the media for the first time in almost two years in a surprise press conference appearance on Tuesday.

Mitchell broke his self-imposed media silence to discuss his friend and teammate Campbell Graham's 150th game as well as briefly touching on his future, Origin and absence from the microphone and camera.

"I only want to talk on special occasions now," a smiling Mitchell said, referring to Graham's milestone.

With his current deal at the Rabbitohs expiring at the end of 2025, Mitchell gave no indication of any desire to leave the club when asked about the incoming PNG Chiefs, who enter the national competition in 2028.

"Who's that?...Is that a team?" Mitchell said tongue-in-cheek when asked about the Chiefs.

He later added: "South Sydney is where it's at" when his future came up again, having directed reporters to his manager on any contract talks.

The 28-year-old has been in devastating form to start the 2026.

He leads the NRL for points scored after nine rounds, sits equal second with left-side pairing Alex Johnston for tries (11) and is fifth for goals and line breaks across the competition.

A dominant career-high four try outing against St George a fortnight ago was amongst this best-ever performances, followed up with the Spirit of the Anzac Medal as best on ground in a drought-breaking win over the Storm in Melbourne.

Another strong showing came in a high-scoring nail-biting loss to Newcastle at the weekend.

Mitchell is firing in his role exclusively at centre this year.

"I approached Wayne (Bennett, Rabbitohs coach) and just said to him that I think I just want to be a team player. And wherever that is for you, Wayne, I'll do. I'd play front row for him," he said.

His form is all but certain to warrant selection in Laurie Daley's Blues side for Origin game I in Sydney on May 27.

"Love the Blues...when we put the blue on, it's a different story,", Mitchell said, adding Daley hasn't been on the phone as of yet.

Mitchell chose to pass on a question about his period away from the media.

Later in the chat Mitchell credited the most important things.

"I'm happy to be here. Obviously you can tell I've got a smile on my face. I've got a great family at home, a good circle and all that matters...just keep playing footy and having fun," he said.

This weekend fourth placed South Sydney (5-3) host the eighth placed Sharks, fresh from their 52-10 demolition of the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

Fresh injury headaches were confirmed on Tuesday afternoon for the Bunnies, with Jack Wighton expected to miss up to two months with a broken arm.

Wighton left the ground early, coming up gingerly from a tackle on Newcastle's Kalyn Ponga mid-way through the first half.

The veteran underwent surgery on Tuesday.

There's no fresh news on David Fifita, who has been missing since injuring his hamstring against the Raiders in round six.

"For him now, it's just about getting back on track and getting fit again and having a crack," Mitchell said of Fifita.

"I love seeing David Fifita when he's running the ball, as everyone does. For me, it's also about making sure he's right 100 per cent and ready to rock whenever he returns."
