Broome locals are expressing outrage after photos and a video emerged of two very young Aboriginal children being detained by a man on a driveway, and another photo showing three young children tied with zip-ties.
While the video and some images are low resolution, another image seen by National Indigenous Times clearly shows three young children restrained with zip-ties, and it is clear the children have been crying.
Two of the children have been identified as a six-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
It is understood the photos and video were shot on Tuesday.
A spokesperson said WA Police are investigating "a confronting incident that unfolded in Broome today involving a six-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy".
"Officers were initially called to a home on Conkerberry Road, Cable Beach, about 2.15pm for a reported trespass incident," they said.
"Officers responded quickly, and when they arrived they found two children had been physically restrained. Officers called St John Ambulance officers to assess the children, who have since been reunited with family members.
"A man has been taken into custody and is assisting with inquiries. Police are working closely with the affected families, and encourage community members to allow officers to thoroughly investigate the matter so that the full circumstances can be established."
