Wiradjuri model, triathlete and disability advocate Jamie Parr has walked in numerous fashion weeks and appeared in many campaigns, but as a below the knee amputee for three years he has found media representation surrounding disability extremely poor.
"Even when we look at TAC (Transport Accident Commission) ads, sure you can have a car accident and you can become disabled, but that is represented in a way and perceived in the way that having a disability is the worst thing that could happen to you. And really, it's not," he said.
Speaking from Melbourne Emporium's Melbourne Fashion Festival live stage, Parr was interviewed by fellow disability advocate Peta Hooke as part of the The Next Big Thing in Fashion is Disability Inclusion show.
Parr shared insights into his experience as a disabled model in the fashion industry and working with numerous inclusive brands.
"Every single brand I've worked with has been very supportive in that sense," Parr said.
"JAM the label, I've just signed on with Lululemon as ambassador. And I've just done Calvin Klein."
Having loved fashion since he was 18, Parr has gone on to star in major campaigns.
But he knows it is a difficult journey for everyone.
"Yes it's my career now but when I first started it was like a little hobby and my way to provide representation and the representation I didn't have," he said.
"But honestly I think the best advice is just to get out there in the fashion world and make yourself known."
Parr will play a prominent role throughout Melbourne Fashion Festival.
Melbourne Fashion Festival runs from March 3 to 11.
