Boorloo Football Club, also known as Perth or the Demons, have become the first club in WAFL history to adopt their Traditional name.

Boorloo will take the field for two rounds under their Whadjuk Noongar name, marking NAIDOC Week.

Demons forward and Indigenous liaison manager Samuel Stubbs told National Indigenous Times the name change was a "great initiative" by the club.

"It is a really significant milestone and highlights the traditional name for Perth," he said.

"We are acknowledging and respecting the traditional name from the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. It's a proud moment for the club to be able to change our name for NAIDOC Week and the two rounds."

Mr Stubbs noted that Perth-Boorloo is the first club in WAFL history to adopt the move.

"It shows our commitment to Reconciliation," he said.

He said the Boorloo NAIDOC round jumper design told the story of two Indigenous players at the club, Simon Hayward and Chapman Jones, and their football journey.

"They started as juniors at Belmont, in our junior zone, and it follows their journey through the ranks with the artwork in the top part of the jumper. In the bottom right part is where they are now at the club, through the middle the highlighted red dots represent the highlights of their careers so far, they both won Colts best and fairest, and graduated from the Colts to the senior side and debuted in the league side.

"And on the back the two circles represent each player and their family, surrounded by the club's playing group."

Melbourne Football Club were the first AFL side to adopt their traditional name - Naarm - and Fremantle followed suit, taking to the field as Walyalup earlier this season.

Boorloo will face the West Coast Reserves this weekend, and South Fremantle in round 14.
