Cairns Indigenous Art Fair has extended a Queensland-wide call out for First Nations models to participate in the event's much-anticipated fashion performance.

Tilted Country Speaking 'Light the Fire', Cairns Indigenous Art Fair's (CIAF) curatorial team is actively calling for experienced and aspiring First Nations models to put themselves forward and apply to participate in the event's runway showcase.

Set to take place on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 July, CIAF will this year celebrate the 15th anniversary season of the celebrated Indigenous art and fashion event.

With expression of interest applications closing on Friday 7 June, applicants are being encouraged to put forward their details sooner rather than later.

CIAF's fashion coordinator, Lynelle Flinders said the opportunity presents as a great chance for young models to build new confidence and network.

"For anyone out there thinking about applying but unsure if they have the right experience or look – just do it," Ms Flinders said.

"This amazing opportunity opens doors to building self-confidence, empowerment, making new friends and potentially, a career in fashion."

This year's cohort of selected models will be an all-ages mix of both new and experienced Indigenous performers, presenting collections from 12 Queensland First Nations designers.

CIAF's fashion performance is renowned for showcasing a diverse array of Indigenous artists and designers.

This performance is not only an artistic platform that serves as a dynamic space for creativity to flourish, but an opportunity for designers and creatives to network, and form working relationships with others in the fashion and arts industry.

The purpose of CIAF's fashion performance is to promote contemporary Indigenous design and empower Indigenous youth by representing who they are and where they come from, and from looking at the event's prior success, this year is said to be just as successful - if not more.

A significant event on the national cultural calendar, CIAF also presents the Art Fair, Art Market, Fashion Performance, Music in the Park, Symposium and more each year.

CIAF will celebrate its 15th anniversary season from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 July 2024.
